Ave HR 177bpm

I'm told that if ridden correctly, a time trial should make you feel sick - if that is the case I definitely did well!

The course was flatish with a couple of killer hills right at the end and some nasty wind to start out. Plan was to keep HR in the 160's and push near the end, that changed to 170's then moved into the 180's with my heart rate finishing at 191bpm (the max I have seen running is 192!)

All in I am happy with my performance, my main goal was to set a time to beat next year although with some decent winter training I fancy doing sub 25mins next year...

On a sadder note I got a weird comment from someone about my bike being " a bit much for this course " which I didn't really see the need for and I'm guessing its down to jealousy.

Still loads to post...

Maxda London Sprint Distance Triathlon 2008 - New Pictures :)

Maxda London Sprint Distance Triathlon 2008

The morning started at a way too early ** o'clock and a beautiful bright sunny morning, maybe it would stay nice all day? Bikes and stuff packed in we made our way to London, lots of sun all the way down, maybe the weather man was wrong?

It took an army of about 50 people to show us to our car parking space - at least we know where the £70 entry fee goes! Once parked up we had a quick look around, picked up our chips and found transition - WHICH IS HUGE!

Decided to get and rack the bikes, I of course didn't bother to put a number on my helmet so had to go back down to fetch it... Once racked up it was time to start getting nervous!

Time at this point started going pretty quick and before I knew it we were being herded to the race briefing, the chap doing it was a bit of a comedian which seemed to

help people calm down a bit :) Our wave was much smaller than the others with just 220 odd but was still pretty packed as we made our way to the swim start...

Swim

Thames water officially tastes terrible, the start of the swim was odd as I found myself swimming the wrong way while waiting for the hooter as I was being drawn into the pack,

once off though I had plenty of clear space around me (benefit of being slow) and started into a steady pace. It was then that something strange happened - I overtook someone!

Swim was generally pretty uneventful apart from getting tangled up with one of the buoy's and missing the step when trying to get out!

Estimated Time: >0:25:00

Actual Time: 0:26:10 - 155th Fastest in wave (1322nd overall)

155th in race

T1

Declined the help getting my wetsuit off and made my way to some very dangerous stairs, over took a few people walking - do they not know its a race? And once I had found

my bike - what is it with people standing in the way when there is a race on? Despite the problems I had a pretty speedy transition - very happy!

Estimated Time: >0:01:00

Actual Time: 0:02:34 - 8th Fastest in wave (23rd overall)

152nd in race

Bike

Lots of overtaking and drizzle! Couldn't get the HRM to tell me what was happening so did the whole ride on feel and as can be seen in the pictures I was pushing it! The disc on full chat

sounded awesome and it felt really good to be racing past lots of bikes. The course itself I thought was pretty ropey, the two bottom turn points were incredibly narrow and

I was lucky that I could boss a bit of space otherwise it may have got a bit hairy. Also there was a section that was more like a building site with rubble all over the place,

not what you need when trying to thread through slower riders. I saw SO much drafting going on and I can only imagine it was worse on sunday with the 400+ waves! I was

overtaken twice on the ride, both times by clearly faster riders (and both with aero helmets - obv where I am lacking). The bike was generally hiccup free as I sat up for most of

the big bends but on the last lap through one of the tighter sections I hit a massive drain cover and lost the front end by about 6-12 inches - that definiately woke me up! I came

round the final bend it come back into Excel but forgot about the last hill and had my feet out of the shoes which made the steep incline much harder than it had to be!

Estimated Time: >0:34:00

Actual Time Lap 1: 0:18:33 - 33rd Fastest in wave (76th overall)

139th in race

Actual Time Lap 2: 0:18:59 - 33rd Fastest in wave (74th overall)

115th in race

Overall Time: 0:37:31 - 35th Fastest in wave (79th overall)

T2

A reprise from the rain for a short while into T2 was very welcome and this time I managed to find my gear pretty quickly, while I was pulling on my shoes though I heard a couple of

bikes go clattering into the railings! Looked painful and I'm glad I didn't get stuck behind the mess!

Estimated Time: >0:01:00

Actual Time: 0:1:30 - 54th Fastest in wave (235th overall)

114th in race

Run

The run started with a twinge of cramp in my left calf that I was tempted to stretch out but fortunately never needed to, my HRM decided to fire itself into life so I could finally

tell how hard I was working! Was concerned about my right knee all the way round but it never developed into anything, seems all my stretching in the weeks leading up paid off.

I managed to settle into a pace that felt comfortable enough to sustain (but again from the pictures it can be seen its not THAT comfortable!) The little hills at the start of each lap

were a bit of a killer but by shortening my stride I got up without too much hassle. I passed a few people on the run (and was passed by some VERY fast runners) and was

generally pretty happy with how it all felt. A quick sprint to the line and it was all over :)

Estimated Time: >0:24:00

Actual Time Lap 1: 0:12:23 - 83rd Fastest in wave (455th overall)

107th in race

Ave HR: 172 Max HR: 181

Actual Time Lap 2: 0:10:52 - 68th Fastest in wave (297th overall)

Ave HR: 177 Max HR: 190

Total Time: 1:30:57

105th in wave

555th overall

In summary I was pleased with my performance, clearly my swimming needs lots of work over the winter but with some improvements my times should start to tumble... The London Triathlon is clearly very well organised but I can't help but think that £70 is a lot for a sprint race - I'm still very tempted to pay for an entry in 2009 though!

I thoroughly enjoyed the sprint distance though and think I will do a few next year as its (fun?) to go all out for an hour and a bit!

Last post before London...

It looks like the cable for my back brake has seized up in the plastic casing, I have a just about working brake but its not going to get much better than that! On a positive note, I have a disc and it looks and sounds AWESOME :)

Good luck for me tomorrow!

Race Targets

Swim - Anything under 25mins
T1 - sub1min (but I guess with the potential length of transition could be much more)
Bike - 32-34mins
T2 - sub1min (again dependant on transition)
Run - 24mins (could be much longer if my knee gives up!)

Total 1hour23-1hour25

24 Hours to the 2008 London Triathlon!

And I have tires, wheels, innertubes everywhere. Lacking the 20mm spanner I require and a back brake that refuses to work properly!

How much more ready can I be? ;)

Londons Looming!

Just 48 hours till I'm swimming in the Thames!

Unfortunately my car has decided that this week would be a good idea to finally stop going into 1st or 2nd gear leaving me with just the bike to get to and from work and pick up any missing bits of kit (I've managed to lose 2 nose clips in a week!)

On a brighter note it looks like I might be disc'd up for London providing I can get a chain whip and figure out how to swap cassettes (and change a tyre, something I haven't done in years - if ever!)

Wednesday 06/08/08 1.6km Open Water Swim

1.6km
?? (?? 800m / ?? 800m)

Last open water swim before London and I wanted to make sure my old (but never worn open water) goggles were not leaking! Thankfully they don't, although its a bit tricky to sight the buoy in the distance without a mask. As usual it felt a lot quicker than my watch said! Got some more feedback at the end as Matt and Ace came out to join me near the end (although I didn't realise and blanked them - Sorry!) although it seems that my head is low in the water apparently it isn't, I think that rather than holding my head low I am just tucking my chin down and I might need to lengthen my stroke out (lots).

Its time to get back to the pool!

Lowestoft Pier to Pier 2008

South Pier - Claremont Pier (1000m approx)

How hard was that! I had no idea how long it was going to take me but was hoping to not finish last (and I didn't, kind of). Felt terrible all the way to Lowestoft, its odd how my stomach gets nervous even when I am not! Weather wasn't looking too hot and it looked like the tide was going the wrong way but what the heck!

The hooter went off for the start and everyone piled in, I figured there was no point in fighting with anyone but managed to knock a small boy by accident (sorry) everything was tight and crowded around the first break and it looked like I was keeping up with everyone (for now). Breathing to the right I could see the stripy life guard station to my right every time I took a breath which got a bit depressing as it didn't appear to be moving! Sighting was a nightmare as the waves were so big I couldn't see the pier in the distance but I kept at it managing to get glimpses every now and then. It was about halfway when I realised I had managed to go VERY far out (I normally pull to the left so must have over compensated) so tried to slowly bring myself closer to the beach (although it made not much difference). It was about this point I realised I must be at the back as I had a canoe alongside me! Lots more mouthfuls of salty water later and I had the pier (finally) to turn, in the pre race briefing they said not to go too close to the pier but I think I might have gone a little too wide! Coming back to shore was the easiest bit having the tide bring me in only to realise that the water I was swimming in was only a foot or so deep. A sprint (ish) to the line and oh? where is the finish? Someone had put a hole in the finishing chute tape and I wasn't sure where to go (pre race briefing mentioned running under the pier) but a few handy spectators shouted the right way and I had finished!

Finish time approx 42mins, which is a bit slower than the winner who did it in 10mins!!

But whatever, its a personal best!

Saturday 02/08/08 2.2km Run

2.2km
0:11:21

Decided to have a swift run around the block to see how my ITB was doing, unfortunately about 1km in I could feel it tightening :( had a little stretch and continued on but within a few hundred metres it was back again. Oddly towards the end of the run it felt better??

Lots of stretching once home - but its not looking good for next weekend :(
